Gouves |
Villaggio e municipio del distretto di Pediada nella prefettura di Iraklion e situato ad un'altezza di 100 metri sopra di livello del mare. Giace a venti kms da Iraklion, e a 17.3 kms sulla Strada Nazionale per Aghios Nikolaos. Il villaggio è costruito sui fianchi occidentali dell'Ederi su una collina alta (322 m.). Il nome della collina viene da "edera" che intende la pianta edera e simboleggia l'affezione. Il nome Gouves, d'altra parte viene da Gouva e vuole dire un cavo nella terra. Vuole dire anche, in Creta, un buconel quale durante i secoli le persone immagazzinarono il loro grano. La prima referenza che noi abbiamo del villaggio è quella di "Guves" nel 1387 i documenti dell'archivio del Duca di Chandax. Più tardi, nel 1577, Fr. Barozzi menziona "Guvos" nel distretto di Pediados, e poi "Guves" nel Registro del 1583, con 252 abitanti. Nel 1630, Vassilikata finalmente si riferisce, a "Vuves '. Questa è la patria del poeta Ioannis Konstantinidis. Ci sono molte chiese notevoli nel villaggio, fra queste citiamo : Zoodochos Pigis, Aghios Giorgos, Aghios Ioannis e Panayia (dedicato alla nascita della Nostra Signora). English Village and municipality of the district of Pediada in the prefecture of Iraklion at a height of 100 metres above sea-level. It lies twenty kms away from Iraklion, to the right at 17.3 kms on the National Road to Aghios Nikolaos. The village is built on the western flanks of the Ederi hill (322 m.). The name comes from "edera" which means ivy and symbolises affection. The name Gouves, on the other hand, comes from Gouva and means a hollow in the earth. It also means, in Crete, a hole in which during the middle ages, people stored their wheat. The earliest reference we have of the village is that of "Guves" in 1387 documents of the Duke’s archives in Chandax. Later on, in 1577, Fr. Barozzi mentions "Guvos" in the district of Pediados, and then "Guves" in the 1583 Register, with 252 inhabitants. Finally, in 1630, Vassilikata refers to "Vuves’. This is the birthplace of the poet Ioannis Konstantinidis. There are several outstanding churches in the village, among them: Zoodochos Pigis, Aghios Giorgos, Aghios Ioannis and Panayia (dedicated to the birth of Our Lady). |
