Maratea

Beaches, the ocean and unique countrysides, the best infrastructures and complete services; from the hotel's morning wake-up call to the say spent on the beach or during a sightseeing trip, from strolls among the shops to the aperitif at the Porticciolo, from dinners at the restaurants to the night spent at the Night Clubs. There are different historical interpretations as to the origin of Maratea. But the two most probable interpretations are: the first being that the first signs of life began in the ancient city which dates back to the Greeks, in the VIII century AD when the founders formed habitat at the top of the mountain of San Biagio, patron saint. Others say that Maratea is the ancient city of Blanda, an important Christian centre which disappeared during the VIII century AD. The story that seems the most probable is the one that the first inhabitants of Maratea were joined together with the ones from Blanda forming one population. Historians also do not agree on the origin of the name: some say that is derives from "Thea-maris", goddess of the sea, others say from "Mar-an-thà", God has come and others yet from "Marathus", land of fennel. With the passing of the centuries Maratea has always remained estranged to revolutions having been conquered by the Normans, by the Angioini and by the Spanish, but always maintaining, due to its excellent geographical position, a status formed by numerous privileges. At the end of 1400 it is told that the inhabitants of Maratea defeated a nighttime attack by the troops of Charles VIII thanks to the divine intervention of San Biagio, who supposedly woke the guards at Maratea Superiore by slapping them then sounding the bell to warn the rest of the population of the danger. Even pirates were kept well away from Maratea thanks to its position, squeezed in by the sea and guarded by seven towers that today are renovated and lived-in, and guarded by the castle on the mountain, which was able to ward off any attack. With the passing of the centuries the original town centre on the mountain moved towards the sea, where all kinds of activities were taken up: from fishing, factory jobs (silk, cotton, linen and leather) whilst on the slopes the production of good wine, lemons, oil and vegetables continued to be produced. It is also said that the best sixteenth century Neapolitan cheese stores were owned by people from Maratea. Already during the 1700 Maratea distinguished itself with the culture of its inhabitants and for its education. Over the years it became an important trading port whereby it was easy to reach Salerno and Napoli. With unification of Italy Maratea became a renowned centre of cultural education where by young students of surrounding cities would come to learn. During the last century the town has become one of the most famous tourist spots of Basilicata and of all Southern Italy. Thanks to this tourism that in recent decades Maratea has developed an intense activity tied to this industry and to which its inhabitants have benefited economically. The transparency of irridescent waters, from turquoise to emerald to deep blue, where red rocks and white calcareous rocks are reflected, together with green hues of pine trees, carob trees, olive trees and from the Mediterranean shrubbery in all its different forms. Fragrances such as rosemary, broom, myrtle and flowers make Mondo Maratea a paradise which renews itself from dusk to dawn and in every season. The sweet waterfalls which descend to the ocean, a diverse coastline, mountains like amphitheatres crown vast forests, plantations and little villages rich with history, towers and walls made of stone, white plaster and red tiles. "…Imagine hundreds of kilometres of cliffs, jagged by caves, of crags, of precipices and of soft beaches right in front of the most spectacular seas, now wide open, now closed by harbours as small as dockyards...." Indro Montanelli
