La sua storia è ormai provata; la prima colonizzazione del terrirorio risale al IX a.C., quasi 3000 anni fa quando "mercanti e viaggiatori anatolici ed achei si affacciarono nel golfo per dirigirsi verso gli empori minerari dell'alto Tirreno" e fondarono Partenope nell'area che include l'isolotto di Megaride ( l'attuale Castel dell'Ovo) e il Promontorio di Monte Echia (l'odierna Monte di Dio e Pizzofalcone). Successivamente, dopo gli eventi bellici, Partenope fu abbandonata e prese il nome di "Palepolis"(città vecchia). Nel 475 d.C. grazie agli abitanti di Cuma fu fondata Neapolis (città nuova) nella parte orientale della città originaria. Neapolis fu costruita secondo una pianta chiamata Ippomadeo, detta "per strigas", una rete di strade poste in modo ortogonale che sono tuttora visibili nella città moderna.
