CHE COSE' CANCUN
Cancún, che in lingua Maya significa "Nido di serpenti", è il centro turistico più importante del Messico ed uno dei più famosi del mondo. La sofisticata infrastruttura, l’offerta di servizi turistici di alta qualità e la varietà delle sue attrazioni, ne hanno fatto la prima meta turistica dei Caraibi. Visitata ogni anno da oltre 3 milioni di persone, apporta - in divise- oltre la terza parte degli ingressi turistici del Paese. Ubicata nel nord del Quintana Roo, uno stato che si trova nella zona sud-est della Repubblica Messicana, Cancún è il punto di comunicazione con le zone archeologiche della regione, sia del Quintana Roo che del vicino Yucatán. Si divide in due aree: una situata nella parte continentale, dove c’è la vera e propria città, e l’altra in un’isola lunga 22 km , su cui si estende la zona degli alberghi (Zona Hotelera). Delimitata a nord dalla Bahia de Mujeres, a est dal Mar dei Caraibi ed a ovest dalla Laguna Nichupte, l‘isola di Cancun, a forma di 7, è unita alla terraferma da due ponti: quello sul canale Nichupte, a 4 km dal centro della città, e quello sul canale Nizuc, all’estremo opposto, che unisce la Punta Nizuc alla parte continentale, vicino all’aeroporto ed alla Riviera Maya.
LA STORIA DI CANCÚN
U UN’ ISOLA DESERTA Appena quarant’anni fa, Cancún era un’ isola deserta e poche persone ne conoscevano l’esistenza. Situata nella regione più dimenticata dei Caraibi messicani, era formata da una duna a forma di sette, con alcuni tratti larghi solo 20 m, separata dalla terraferma da due stretti canali che collegavano il mare con un ampio sistema di lagune.Le rive erano coperte da pantani ed in generale circondate da mangrovie, selva vergine e spiagge inesplorate. La denominazione esatta presentava dei dubbi: in alcune carte geografiche il nome dell’area appariva come "Kankun" (un solo vocablo con la lettera "k"), che in Maya significa "pentola di serpenti" o "nido di serpenti". Però nei primi documenti di Infratur (l’ente incaricato dello sviluppo e della programmazione urbanistica, che oggi si chiama Fonatur), la designazione appare separata in due vocaboli: Kan Kun , e, a volte, Can Cún (forse per influenza spagnola). Cancún, l’attuale denominazione, si deve forse alla comodità fonetica, all’uso o al caso.
UN MONDO DI DIVERTIMENTI
Fin dalla sua fondazione, Cancún si è distinta per l’ospitalità e le molteplici possibilità di divertimento e distensione. Vi si possono praticare molti sport acquatici e terrestri, fare delle gite in barca, fare ecoturismo e visitare le zone archeologiche. Per fare acquisti e per divertirsi nei centri commerciali c’è solo l’imbarazzo della scelta e la vita notturna nei bar e nelle discoteche è vivace e dinamica. I ristoranti sono eccellenti.
INFRASTRUTTURA TURISTICA ALBERGHI Attualmente a Cancún ci sono più di 143 strutture di accoglienza (inclusi ville in affitto, condomini e pensioni familiari) che offriranno, alla fine del 2002, oltre 26.500 camere. Salvo una quindicina di alberghi ubicati nella zona urbana, tutti gli altri sorgono nella zona della spiaggia; le loro stanze si affacciano sul mare o sulla laguna

WHAT IS CANCUN? GEOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION
Cancun, or "Nest of Serpents" in the Mayan language, is Mexico's world famous tourist resort. Its sophisticated infrastructure, variety of top quality tourism services and diversity of attractions have turned it into the Caribbean's premier destination. Cancun is visited by more than three million people from all over the world each year and contributes more than one third of Mexico's tourism generated revenues. Ensconced in northern Quintana Roo, a state located in southeast Mexico, Cancun is a hub linking the state's archaeological sites with those of the neighboring state of Yucatán. Cancun is divided into two areas: one on the mainland, where the city itself is located, and the other, a 20-kilometer-long island occupied by the Hotel Zone. Cancún Island ?shaped like a number "7" and flanked by Bahía de Mujeres to the north, the Caribbean Sea to the east and Nichupté Lagoon to the west is joined to the mainland by two bridges. The first crosses the Nichupté Channel, four kilometers from downtown Cancun, and the second joins Punta Nizuc to the mainland at Nizuc Channel to the south, en route to the airport and the Riviera Maya.
TOURISM INFRASTRUCTURE HOTELS
Cancun currently has more than 143 hotels (including villas, condominiums and family hostels) that will offer more than 26,500 rooms by the end of 2002. With the exception of some 15 hotels in the city, all are located in the beach area and, due to the narrowness of the island, their rooms offer both ocean and lagoon views. Although tourists visiting Cancun tend toward the luxury end of the scale, there are several lodging plans. One is timeshare, oriented towards family vacations, which allows visitors to purchase a week or even a month a year in a fully-equipped villa or condominium that even includes daily maid service. The other plan is all inclusive, which includes access to all services: hotel room and food and beverages in the hotel's bars and restaurants, nighttime entertainment and water sports at affiliated hotels, all for a single package price. The minimum rate for a room in the Hotel Zone is US $120 and downtown rooms are available for between US$40 and US$80.
THE UNDERWATER WORLD
With 860 kilometers of coastline, the coast of Quintana Roo is the second longest in the Caribbean after Cuba. However, it has very distinct characteristics because it is at one and the same time Caribbean, Mexican and the Maya World. Its coral reef ecosystem is considered the longest in America and the second longest in the world at 500 kilometers long and between 100 and 250 wide at the northern end and 3,000 meters wide at the southern end where it reaches its maximum development. The reef extends practically the entire length of the state's coastline, from Punta Nizuc in Cancun to the Bay of Honduras.

Due to the natural beauty of the Mexican Caribbean and its infrastructure, Cancun is one of the most complete beach destinations, which makes it ideal for the incentive market. The climate is perfect for organizing incentive trips any time of the year, with an average of 253 sunny days and temperatures varying between 29°C and 36°C from April to September and 18°C to 28°C the rest of the year. Cancun's hotels ?from 3-star to Grand Tourism? have restaurants, bars and pools with wet bars; air conditioning, ceiling fans, television and servibars; most are on the beach and have ample gardens, a marina, car rental agency and parking lot; a gift shop, valet laundry and baby sitting services; and almost all contain a beauty salon, spa and tennis courts. Some offer meeting rooms with audiovisual equipment, banquet room, gymnasium and even a golf course, disco and sports facilities. Some of the most important events recently held in Cancun include the World Economic Forum, the UN Commission of Processes in Developing Countries, The CHA (Caribbean Hotel Association) Market Place and the Fifth International ICCA (International congress and Convention Association) Congress. Cancun's proximity and easy access to sites of interest in the region have made it a base for visiting the peninsula. Direct flights between Cancun and many cities in Mexico, the United States, Europe, Central and South America are a valuable support system for incentive group, congress and convention organizers. There are also convenient air connections to Japan and other points throughout the world.
SEEKING OUT NATURE
Almost the entire state of Quintana Roo is flat, with an average altitude of no more than 10 meters above sea level. The exception to this is the western portion of the state, where the land reaches 200 meters above sea level on the low Zohlaguna tectonic plate. Yalahau Lagoon occupies the north coast and from Cabo Catoche the coast turns south; its major geographic formations are Cozumel Island and Ascensión, Espíritu Santo and Chetumal Bays. The entrance to Chetumal Bay is dangerous due to numerous coral banks. The majority of the state is composed of limestone, and rain water filters through to form cenotes and caves. The only surface rivers are RÌo Azul and RÌo Hondo.
EXPLORING THE MEXICAN CARIBBEAN ISLA MUJERES
A short boat ride across the bay from Cancun lies sister island, Isla Mujeres. Tiny Isla has a number of attractions, on land and underwater, and its relaxed Caribbean ambiance makes it a favorite with visitors. The village lies immediately behind the ferry docks and is a mix of colorful craft shops, bars, restaurants and small hotels. Some of the clapboard houses lining the streets offer a taste of the Caribbean of yesteryear. Sun worshippers make a beeline for Playa Norte or Cocos, Playa Lancheros and Playa Indios. Divers can discover reefs such as Los Manchones and El Túnel or the Cave of the Sleeping Sharks which was discovered by Jacques Cousteau. On land, visitors can hire golf buggies, bikes and mopeds or a taxi to visit Laguna Macax, a turtle farm, the ruins of Hacienda Mundaca, Garrafón marine park and the ancient Mayan temple crowning Punta Sur.
