Le Canarie sono sette isole spagnole incastonate nell'Oceano Atlantico, di fronte al Marocco e alla Mauritania.
Sono note già fin dall'antichità: vi si recavano i Fenici, per i loro traffici con i popoli africani.
Plinio il Vecchio le indicava col nome di "Insulae Fortunatae", soprattutto per il loro clima mite.
Secondo alcune leggende, le isole Canarie erano il regno delle Esperidi, secondo altre leggende, le isole sarebbero ciò che resta della mitica Atlantide descritta da Platone.
Nel secolo XIV furono scoperte dai navigatori italiani, poi dai francesi e portoghesi, infine dagli spagnoli, che le infeudarono nel secolo XV, facendone uno scalo per le traversate atlantiche.
In epoca più recente le isole Canarie sono state scoperte dai turisti di tutto ilo mondo per il loro clima mite.
Tenerife, che, come tutte le altre isole, è di origine vulcanica, è considerata l'isola dell'eterna primavera, tanto da essere la quarta meta turistica d'Europa, visitata da milioni di turisti.

In inverno la temperatura non scende al di sotto dei 14°, mentre in estate, grazie ai venti alisei provenienti dall'Atlantico, la temperatura non oltrepassa i 29°. Ogni isola, ogni luogo ha un suo particolare microclima, per cui ci sono differenze notevoli tra Nord e Sud, e tra zone vicine al mare e zone di montagna. Moltissime sono le zone protette, il che offre una natura incontaminata e interessante dal punto di vista geologico-naturalistico.
Tenerife è la più grande delle isole Canarie, con i suoi 2034 Kmq di superficie, ricca di spiagge bellissime, di un mare stupendo.
La caratteristica particolare di Tenerife è la montagna del Teide, la vetta più elevata della Spagna, un vulcano spento che domina tutta l'isola con i suoi 3718 metri, meta di escursioni , dove si può osservare un paesaggio fantastico e quasi lunare, dove si possono osservare i segni delle eruzioni avvenute nel corso dei secoli.

Le spiagge sono tutte di straordinaria bellezza, e tutte molto varie quanto alle caratteristiche: si possono trovare spiagge naturali, artificiali, per nudisti, con sabbia nera, con sabbia dorata…La principale località turistica di Tenerife è Playa de las Americas, nel Sud dell'isola, con i suoi lungomare, affollati di turisti, ricchi di negozi di vario genere, di ristoranti, di bar e locali di ritrovo, aperti tutta la notte per il divertimento dei turisti. Vicino a Playa de las Americas si trova Los Cristianos, ricca di spiagge frequentatissime, con un importante porto, da cui si parte per le escursioni nelle altre isole. Nella Costa del Silenzio si trovano diverse spiagge di sabbia vulcanica: A Los Abrigos ci sono numerosi ristoranti e locali in prossimità del mare. Interessante per gli amanti del surf è la spiaggia del Medano, che è la più estesa dell'isola. Suggestive scogliere, fino a 500 metri, si possono osservare a Los Gigantes. Il mare offre inoltre suggestivi fondali, delizia dei pescatori subacquei.
