Umag

The island on which the first community settlement was established was called the "Castello di Umago", and was surrounded by secure medieval walls, which were erected around 1000 AD and reinforced in the 14th century with armed towers. Part of the settlement developed outside the city walls. This area, which was called "Borgo", was first mentioned in a record in 1333. Although much has been lost due to Umag's stormy history, not to mention the destruction caused by the city's greatest enemy - fire, today the old city core is full of reminders from that era: wall remains, Venetian villas and above all, picturesque narrow streets. The city of Umag is known as a co-founder of the long-term project regarding the protection, restoration and revitalisation of the Istrian organ and the international festival "Organ Day in Istria", which is held annually during the second week of September. The magnificent church-organ of the parish church of St. Peregrine was constructed in1776 by Francesco Dacci, and belongs to the grouping of Venetian-Dalmatian great organs. The parish church dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and St. Peregrine is located on the site of a 6th century sacral building, the last addition being made in 1760, a project completed under the direction of the Piranean architect Zuane Dongetti. Along with the main altar, portraits of the assumption of the Virgin Mary and marble statues of the patron saints St. Peregrine and St. Nicefor, there are six minor baroque altars on the side walls of the church. Of special interest is the wooden Venetian triptych dating from the 15th century, which stood above the altar of the old church. The bell-tower, dating also from the 15th century and built in the Venetian style was restored in 1691, and is 40 metres in height. The Savudrian lighthouse, one of the oldest in Istria, is well-known to sailors due to its strong signal. Built in 1847 as a copy of the Trieste lantern, this lighthouse is 36 metres in height and its light signal can be seen from as far away as 17 nautical miles. During good weather it is visible from any point in the Gulf of Trieste, all the way to Grado. Not far from Umag, on the punta Rosazzo or ancient Rosaceum, is the small but very old Church of St. Pelegrin. It was built by the inhabitants of Umag as a means of marking the spot where the saint endured and suffered his martyrdom, during the Diocletian era and where, on 23 May 303 AD, he was killed. The church's existence was first recorded in 1106.Between Zambratia and punta Katoro, at low tide, a small peninsula 200 metres in length and 50 metres wide emerges, as well as a heap of stones - all that remain of the ancient Castle of Sipar from the 5th century. The city of Siparis already existed here during the Roman era, proof of this being the foundations of villas and houses, mosaics, marble, ceramic, urns and coins being found in this location, all dating from the era of Constantine and Valerius. Sipar was totally plundered and destroyed by the Neretianpirates, with Ban Domagoj leading them, in 876, never again to achieve its previous significance. The peninsula of Katoro is the site of a large Roman villa, uncovered in 1875. This luxurious villa had its own Roman spa, cistern, huge dwelling quarters lavishly decorated with mosaics on the floor and frescos on the walls. The remains of a pier measuring 30 metres in length and 6 metres wide are located in the sea near the villa, while the remnants of an enormous construction can also be discerned, most likely the pool of this Roman villa. A real paradise for divers!
