Zanzibar è un posto mitico che ha affascinato la fantasia occidentale fin dal medioevo. La sua fama, però, è cresciuta nell'Ottocento, quando diventò sultanato e poi capitale dell'Oman. Da Zanzibar, ogni anno, passavano migliaia di schiavi catturati nel continente nero. Essi venivano battuti all'asta nel famoso mercato di Stone Town, e da qui venivano venduti in tutto l'Oceano Indiano. Alla metà dell'Ottocento, grazie al lavoro degli schiavi che lavoravano nelle piantagioni di cocco e di spezie, Zanzibar conquistò il monopolio mondiale per la produzione di chiodi di garofano. La prosperità economica dovuta al commercio di schiavi e avorio, e alla produzione di chiodi di garofano, la rigogliosità delle foreste tropicali, valsero a Zanzibar appellativi quali l'Isola delle Spezie e l'Isola di Smeraldo.

The Spice island of Zanzibar lies off the coast of Tanzania in the Indian Ocean It is famous for once being the commercial centre of East Africa and the last place to abolish the slave trade. Today it combines ancient Islamic ruins, noble Arabic houses with miles of white sandy palm fringed beaches and coves. The ocean offers warm clear blue waters, idyllic islands excellent reefs for snorkelling and diving, fantastic deep sea fishing, water sports and of course delicious fresh fish. And if you thought that wasn't enough, visiting the Spice plantations (cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, cardamom and others) or haggling for carvings in the Central Market is great fun too.
