Arzachena extends for 240 square km and its coastline, including Costa Smeralda, is 80 km long and full of mediterranean-scrub vegetation (lentisk, juniper and wilde olive), rocks smoothed by nature and beautiful beaches and inlets. It was founded by the romans and, until 1800, it was just a group of houses built around the church of Santa Maria, dedicated to the Madonna della Neve (1776). During March 1962, a small group of international financial experts of the prince Karim Aga Khan created the "Consorzio Costa Smeralda" in order to make the wide municipality of Arzachena (55 km long, from Liscia Ruja to Liscia di Vacca) a tourist destination. Here, many prestigious structures were built: luxurious hotels and exclusive villas became the favourite summer destinations of the jet set.

This important project was designed to protect the natural beauties of the territory, following specific construction and architectural standards in full compliance with nature. That is how the typical style of Costa Smeralda was born, inspired by the rural houses of the farmers that discreetly blended with the surrounding rocks and vegetation. The urban structure of the inhabited centre is one of the most characteristic structures in Sardinia beacuse of the materials used (pink sardinian quartz) and the uniformity of its buildings and road structure.

Arzachena is also important from an archeological point of view: the giants' tomb of Lu Coddhu 'Ecchju; the giants' tomb of Li Loghi; the Albucciu nuraghe and the small temple of Malchittu. Those who are interested in visiting the town will find clean and well-kept areas full of green spaces and little squares, with shops that sell both traditional sardinian products and more refined products.
