The Albergo Diffuso Dimora Sant'Anna, in the historical centre of Carovigno (BR), owes its name to the adjacent church of Sant'Anna. This complex consists of a central building near Castello Dentice di Frasso and a series of apartments among the alleys and the white houses of the so-called "Rione Terra", a beautiful historical centre of High Salento. The recently-built Dimora Sant'Anna kept the ancient architectural features: the rooms, with starry and barrel vaults, are decorated with stone elements and enriched with local materials, but at the same time they are furnished with a modern and comfortable style. It guarantees all the standard services pf a hotel in an exquisite urban context, restoring and giving value to preexisting historical houses. This facility is the ideal place for couples, families and groups.
Carovigno has 17.044 inhabitants and is located 5 km far from the Adriatic coast and 28 km from Brindisi, in the northern part of Salento. Its coastline was awarded with a "bandiera blu" in 2007 and 2016, and in 2017 it was awarded with: "bandiera blu", "5 sails" of Legambiente, since it belongs to the "Costa del Parco Agrario degli Ulivi Secolari" (which also includes Polignano a Mare, Fasano, Monopoli and Ostuni) and also won the "spiga verde" for its rural villages. It extends for 105 square kilometers and is located 172 meters on the sea level.
Places to know and visit
The Parrochiale, dedicated to the Assunta, was built in 1837 but still shows traces of the previous sixteenth-century structure with a rose on the right side and the apse in the left aisle. The apse has ten recesses on two levels. On the main altar there is a painting of the "Ultima Cena" (eighteenth century).
The Church of the Carmine, next to the city castle. Inside, there are frescos of the Ultima Cena and Sant'Elia in the desert and an oil painting of San Lorenzo between the martyrs Leonardo and Stefano, all of them dated back to the eighteenth century.
The Church of Sant'Anna, built by the Imperiali family (seventeenth/eighteenth century) near the castle, was a private chapel of the lords (almost completely renovated with a neo-romanic style).
The Sanctuary of Maria Santissima di Belvedere, 4 km far from the town, built in 1875 where a basilian monastery was located and of which there is still a vault. On the ciborium there is the date (1501), the signature of Giovanni Lombardo of Ostuni and the name of the customer: Pirro de Loffredo. On a side altar there is the very ancient fresco of the sweet face of the Madonna (repainted multiple times) worshipped by the people during the week after Easter, and many other byzantine frescos.
Porta Brindisi, which consists of two subsequent doors: the door of the Angevin age, with a pointed arch crowned with "beccatelli", and the door of the Renaissance (built during the period when the Loffreda lords owned the feud) with a round arch, that preceeds the older door. It maintained the original base of the gate. On the front, there are two emblems: the one of the Loffreda family on the left, and the one of the University of Carovigno on the right.
Porta Nova. It is located in the western part of the town and is also called Porta Ostuni, since it is near Ostuni. It connects the castle to the Church of Sant'Anna and was often modified, especially during the restorations of the castle at the beginning of 1900.
Ostuni - A pleasant walk through the alleys of the white city with its wonderful Borgo Antico full of artisans, stories, scents and gastronomy. The tourists can visit the cathedral and the other churches.
Alberobello - surrounded by a flourishing vegetation of almond and olive trees. It is famous for its typical houses, the "trulli". The trulli are a UNESCO's world heritage since 1996; they are conical structures built with dry stone that create a unique urban centre with nice little alleys.
Castellana - 3 km of karstic complex. Where there was an old river, there are now wonderful natural sculptures.
Lecce - you cannot spend a holiday in Salento without visiting Lecce. The baroque churches, the narrow labyrinthine alleys, the castles make Lecce an aristocratic city full of art: the old Piazza Sant'Oronzo, the beautiful visitable monasteries, the majestic Piazza Duomo, the Palazzo dei Celestini with the famous cathedral of Santa Croce, the little stone houses with their wrought-iron balconies and the lampposts which suggestively light up the whole city during the night.
Torre Guaceto - the excursion follows scented paths of mediterranean scrub which lead to quiet beaches. There is a tower, from which it is possible to enjoy the landscape, and a canebrake.
