An 11-day tour of Mexico with a local Italian-speaking guide that blends cultural capitals, iconic archaeological sites, and stunning nature. Starting in Mexico City and the impressive Teotihuacan, with the Pyramids of the Sun and the Moon, the journey continues to the baroque center of Puebla and the colonial charm of Oaxaca, with the ruins of Mitla. Next is Tehuantepec and the Sumidero Canyon, sailing the Grijalva River among towering cliffs and protected wildlife. Stops include San Cristóbal de las Casas, Villahermosa, and the jungle of Palenque.
The itinerary then follows the coast to colorful Campeche, on to Mérida and the Mayan masterpiece of Chichén Itzá, before ending on the beaches of Cancún. A complete journey through colonial cities, Mayan sites, and breathtaking landscapes. Teotihuacan, Palenque, Campeche, and Chichén Itzá are UNESCO World Heritage Sites, ensuring historical and cultural significance.

Day 1 Mexico City
Welcome to Mexico!
Upon arrival at Benito Juárez International Airport in Mexico City, you will begin your journey in one of the world’s largest and most vibrant metropolises, comparable to Seoul and Tokyo. Founded by the Aztecs in 1325 as Tenochtitlan, built on an island in Lake Texcoco and almost entirely destroyed during the siege of 1521, the city was later rebuilt following Spanish urban standards, becoming today’s capital that blends history, tradition, and modernity.
After arrival formalities, transfer to the hotel and check-in at Hotel Estoril or a similar property (Standard Room).

The day begins with a visit to the National Museum of Anthropology (closed on Mondays), considered one of the finest museums in the world. Opened in 1963, this modern building is renowned for its impressive central courtyard, partly covered by a sculpted umbrella-shaped dome, designed by Mexican architect Pedro Ramírez Vázquez.

In the afternoon, explore the Zócalo, the main square in the heart of Mexico City’s historic center and one of the largest urban squares in the world. Here you will admire the Metropolitan Cathedral, built between 1573 and 1813 around the first church erected after the Spanish conquest of Tenochtitlán. Continue to El Palacio Nacional, once the seat of Mexico’s federal executive power, where the grand stairway and second-floor walls are decorated with Diego Rivera’s famous murals.

The day begins with a visit to the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the most important Marian shrine in the Americas, which welcomes over 20 million pilgrims each year, making it the most visited Catholic site in the world after the Vatican. Inside, you will see the sacred cloak of Juan Diego, miraculously bearing the image of the Virgin Mary. The complex includes several chapels, among them the evocative Chapel of El Cerrito, built on the very spot of the apparitions. The first chapel was erected here in 1660 to commemorate the three appearances of the Virgin of Guadalupe.

Continue with a visit to the awe-inspiring archaeological site of Teotihuacan, once the most populated and vibrant city of the central valley. The majestic Pyramids of the Sun and the Moon, together with the Temple of Quetzalcoatl, stand as eternal witnesses of its glorious past. From the top of the pyramids, a breathtaking view of the surrounding plain awaits. The experience will be enriched by a visit to an obsidian workshop and a tasting of pulque, the traditional pre-Hispanic Mexican beverage.
Afterwards, departure for Puebla.

Departure towards Oaxaca, a land of ancient civilizations and extraordinary cultural richness.

In the afternoon, visit Monte Albán, founded about 500 years before Christ. For over a millennium, it was the capital of the “Cloud People,” the Zapotecs, who developed their civilization here, leaving behind temples, ceremonial plazas, and underground tombs. Monte Albán, once the spiritual and political heart of the region, is today the largest and most significant archaeological site in Oaxaca, a place that still tells the story of a great civilization.
Continue to the city of Oaxaca, a fascinating destination where splendid colonial architecture blends with Zapotec and Mixtec traditions, as well as nearby archaeological treasures that reveal its millenary past.

The day begins with a visit to the famous Árbol del Tule, an enormous cypress located in the churchyard of Santa María del Tule, just 9 km from Oaxaca on the road to Mitla. With its monumental trunk, it is considered one of the largest and oldest trees in the world, a true symbol of strength and longevity in Mexican nature.
Continue towards Mitla (closed on Mondays and Tuesdays), one of the most fascinating and important archaeological sites in the state of Oaxaca. Located about 30 miles east of the city, within the modern Zapotec town of San Pablo Villa de Mitla, this sacred place was once a major religious center. Its exquisite geometric stone mosaics remain unique in pre-Columbian art.

In the afternoon, depart for Tehuantepec, traveling through evocative landscapes that lead towards the Pacific coast.

Departure to Chiapa de Corzo, a picturesque colonial town and starting point for the excursion to the majestic Sumidero Canyon. Here you will enjoy an exciting motorboat ride (SIB service) along the Grijalva River, flowing between towering cliffs that rise up to 1,000 meters.
According to local legends, after the Spanish conquest, the native people of the region chose to leap from the canyon’s heights into the river rather than submit to the invaders. During the boat ride, you will admire breathtaking scenery and, with some luck, spot crocodiles and monkeys in their natural habitat.

Continue to San Cristóbal de las Casas, a charming colonial city with cobblestone streets, historic churches, and an authentic atmosphere that reflects the history and indigenous traditions of Chiapas.

In the afternoon, departure to Campeche, a charming port city on the Gulf of Mexico. Upon arrival, explore its fortified historic center, founded in 1540 and later protected in the 17th century by massive walls and bastions built to defend against pirate attacks. Strolling through its colorful streets means stepping back in time into a unique colonial atmosphere, today recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Departure to Chichén Itzá, the largest and most impressive pre-Hispanic archaeological complex of the Yucatán Peninsula. This extraordinary ceremonial center, built during the Classic period by the Maya, was later invaded by Toltec warriors from the central highlands, who left their mark with unique architectural influences.
At the heart of the site rises the famous Pyramid of Kukulcán, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Inside, it preserves an enlarged stone throne in the shape of a jaguar with jade eyes, a powerful symbol of sacred authority.
