Locality
San Nicola Arcella, in the province of Cosenza, Calabria, is located on a 110-meter cliff overlooking the sea with a breathtaking view on the Gulf of Policastro. It has the typical mediterranean climate, with not too-hot summers and not too-cold winters thanks to its strategic location on a hill near the sea. The coastline is mainly rocky and full of beaches set in the rocks. The territory is covered in cedar trees and that is the reason why the "Riviera dei Cedri" begins in San Nicola Arcella.
Places to know and visit
The Island of Dino, in front of Praia a Mare. It probably owes its name to the temple (aedina) dedicated to Venus or maybe to the greek word "dina", meaning whirlwind, storm. Beside the mediterranean scrub, many rare plants can also be found like the "palma nana", the "talittro calabro", the carnation of the cliffs (Dianthus rupicula) and, more importantly, the Primula of Palinuro. Thanks to its rich and various flora, a Natural Reserve will be established on the island. The local fauna consists of many species of migratory birds, seagulls and some bird of prey; "castagnole", moray eels, octopuses, groupers, "ricciole".
Torre Crawford, an old sarecenic tower. It owes its name to Lord Francis Marion Crawford, an american writer who fell in love with the San Nicola Arcella bay while exploring Italy on a small boat with his wife and a sailor. Crawford used to stay in the tower, where he drew inspiration for his stories: some of them took place right in the calabrian village.
The Santuario Diocesano Santa Maria della Grotta. The sanctuary is a quiet place to pray and meditate. It is the ideal destination for a pilgrimage, with its completely restored Casa Canonica, where tourists can meditate and pray together with other people. A visit to the old cave and the Santuario della Madonna in Praia a Mare, in the province of Cosenza, is also recommended.
"Grotta del leone", the lion cave. Located on the island of Dino, it owes its name to the presence of a rock that resembles a lying-down lion. It is only one of the many caves on the coast of the island.
The beach of San Nicola Arcella Arcomagno is one of the most appreciated destinations of the northern part of the tyrrhenian Calabria and one of the most beautiful beaches of this region. A spur located 100 meters on the sea level allows the tourists to enjoy the view on the wonderful calabrian coast, on the island of Dino and the entire Gulf of Policastro.
The small beach of Marinella is the closest one to the "Arco Magno of San Nicola Arcella", also known as Grotta del Saraceno. It is a natural sculpture carved by the constant erosion of the sea.
The Grotta dell'Arco Magno (also Grotta del Saraceno) can be reached by boat or swimming. The small beach of the Arco Magno, also known as beach of Enea, is a little earthly paradise with a natural half moon-shaped lagoon, 25 meters long. In the past, this was the landing place of the Saracens who attacked the calabrian coasts from the sea. The entire beach is covered in pebbles and on the right there is the Saracenic Cave. Inside the cave there is a natural freshwater spring. On the beach there are piled-up rocks that form a natural arch, known as the Arch of Enea who, according to the legend, came here right after the fall of Troy.
