Abruzzo: cosa vedere

Le migliori destinazioni da esplorare

Abruzzo is a region located in middle Italy and characterized by mountains (like the Gran Sasso), hills, valleys and shores on the Adriatic sea. There are many natural reserves like the National Park of Abruzzo, the Majella Park and the Gran Sasso Park where the golden eagle, wolves and bears live. Its valleys are full of ancient hamlets and towns where traditional festivals and events are organized; here it is possible to visit monasteries and extremely interesting castles. L'Aquila, the regional county seat, has a rich artistic patrimony: the Basilica di San Bernardino, the Castle of Celano, the Basilica di Santa Maria di Collemaggio and the fountain of the 99 faucets, embellished with 99 stone masks. Its coastline is characterized by long sandy shores like those of Pescara, Tortoreto, Giulianova, Silvi Marina, Roseto, Ortona, Vasto and San Salvo.

Abruzzo offers various types of holidays to its visitors: in the apennine area it is possible to practice winter sports like skiing, snowboarding and snow rafting (Roccaraso, Pescasseroli and Rivisondoli); the nature lovers can take long excursions by foot or by bike and visit the protected areas; on the coastline the tourists can relax and have fun practicing water sports like sailing, canoeing, fishing and windsurfing.

This region has a rich gastronomic tradition and each province has its own specialties. Among the typical regional dishes there are square-cut egg spaghetti, scrippelle (typical of Teramo), and fish-based dishes like the "scapece" in the coastal area. Wine lovers can enjoy a tour through the olive groves and vineyards tasting excellent wines, oils and dairy products.
