What to do in Amalfi
Amalfi is a town in the province of Salerno in Campania, an ancient maritime republic that gives its name to the Amalfi Coast that, since 1997 has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its foundation dates back to the Romans and, from 1800, first among the maritime republics, Amalfi rivaled with Pisa, Venice and Genoa for the control of the Mediterranean Sea. The Maritime Code of Amalfi, better known as Amalfi Tables, had a great influence until the seventeenth century.
Amalfi is one of the most famous tourist centers of the Campania coast, known and appreciated all over the world for its artistic and natural beauty, the clear sea and the well-developed tourist accommodation. The town of Amalfi, unmistakable and picturesque, clings to the rocky peaks of the Lattari mountains and every corner, streets and squares open perspectives that have enchanted generations of travelers. Those who visit Amalfi will encounter a romantic landscape, made of villas and houses leaning against each other and mountains overlooking the sea.
The center of Amalfi is divided into a series of alleys and streets where you can taste the typical fried fish heart and on which dominates the Cathedral, dedicated to Sant 'Andrea, which has a facade decorated mosaics and which is accessed through an impressive staircase. From the portico of the Duomo you can access the Cloister of Paradise and the Basilica of the Crucifix. Taking a narrow street you can reach, through narrow and winding ramps and narrow streets, the monumental cemetery that dominates Amalfi and the center of Atrani, passing through several beautiful and significant places, including the ancient convent of San Francesco with the beautiful cloister. Particularly flourishing in the history of the city is the paper industry, producer of the famous and valuable paper of Amalfi, and you can visit the Paper Museum, located in an old water mill, where there are ancient machines.
