is only a few steps away from the elegant centre of Casamicciola Terme, where the oldest thermal springs (dated back to the roman age) of the island are located. In the historical centre there is a pedestrian area surrounded by shops, bars, restaurants and artisans' workshops. The hotel was recently renovated and is situated 200 meters far from the harbour of Casamicciola and the beach: the scent of the sea pervades the entire seafront that connects Casamicciola to the adjacent municipality of Lacco Ameno, another important tourist and cultural centre, that can be reached taking a pleasant walk by the sea. The building has the characteristic mediterranean style with light and delicate colors that resemble the blue of the sea and the sky, the green of the surrounding pinewoods and the ocher of the sunrays and the volcanic land. Standing on the terrace that overlooks the wonderful gulf it is possible to appreciate magical sunsets and sunrises; the marble, the majolicas and the sunny glimpses coming from every angle create exciting harmonies.
Locality
Casamicciola Terme is situated in the northern part of the island and has a tourist and commercial harbour. It borders with the municipalities of Ischia Porto and Barano d'Ischia, to which it's connected by the path that separates the Bosco della Maddalena from the Monte Maschiatta. The edge of the Jetto hill separates Casamicciola from the municipality of Serrara Fontana; it also touches Forio and Lacco Ameno (in other words, it borders with every other municipality of the island). It is mainly hilly and has a surface of 5,5 square km.
Places to know and visit
"Basilica del Sacro Cuore di Gesù e Santa Maria Maddalena Penitente"
The original church was destroyed by the 1883 earthquake so its date of "birth" is unknown. Then it was rebuilt and inagurated in the 1896. It has three naves, an altar made of polichrome marbles and other eight altars situated in the eight side chapels. It has an eight-century marble baptismal font, many statues and hosts the grave of Giuseppe Morgera. In may 1965, Pope Paolo VI promoted it to "minor cathedral".
"Confraternita di Santa Maria della Pietà"
This church was built in the 1897 and hosts the seventeenth-century painting "La deposizione del Signore dalla Croce" by Andrea Vaccaro, inspired by the naturalism of Caravaggio, which he reinterpreted in a classicist style. He used different painting methods and the main charateristics of his works are the regularity of the shapes, the use of light colors and the almost total absence of expressions and violent attitudes in the portrayed characters.
Church of Sant'Antonio al Mortito
The church of Sant'Antonio da Padova was built in the 1955, and what we see now is the result of the many restorations that a small rural church, built in the 1962 by Cesare Corbera, underwent. On the marble altar there is the wooden statue of Sant'Antonio da Padova (nineteenth century) that replaced the old terracotta statue dated back to the 1850. In the church there are other three statues: San Giuseppe, the Cuore di Gesù and the Immacolata.
Castiglione Thermal Park
It is situatued in a bay surrounded by a flourishing mediterranean scrub, which makes it a quiet and relaxing place. The Castiglione Thermal Park has 10 pools: 8 of them have thermal waters that go from a 30°C temperature to a 40°C one; one big seawater pool (25m x 14m), direct access to the sea and private beach.
Itineraries and nature trips in the "Bosco della Maddalena and Cretaio"
Green pines and shaded paths lead to a hill that has a wonderful view on the harbour of Ischia Porto. The first part of the path is paved, then there is a local-stone stairway that leads to a well-kept path surrounded by the mediterranean scrub of the Cretaio, ancient area originated by eruptions, that has a panoramic promontory with a view on the municipality of Ischia and its Aragonese Castle and on Casamicciola. Proceeding in the wood full of pines, myrtle shrubs and holm-oak trees you can reach Fondo D'Oglio, a crater of about 350 meters of diameter and 127-meter deep.
Old factory of Terracotte Mennella (free access)
Thanks to its 500 years of history, it is one of the most important traditions of Ischia that has been known for the manufacturing of terracotta and the production of vases since the eighth century B.C., as many archeological findings testify: for example, there is the notorious Nestore Cup, one of the first expressions of poetry in the Occident. There are many prestigious pieces and creations exhibited in the factory that highlight the decorative ability and creativity of the artists of Ischia.
