What to see in Ugento
Ugento is a municipality in lower Salento, in the province of Lecce, and its territory includes part of the ionian coastline with the fractions of Gemini, Torre San Giovanni, Lido Marini, the marina of Torre Mozza and Fontanelle. Ugento was recognized as an art city and tourist locality in 2008 for its architectural, archeological and natural beauties. It is located 60 km far from Lecce, 23 km from Santa Maria di Leuca and 25 km from the famous Gallipoli.
Ugento's territory has a great variety of landscapes: its coastal area extends for 12 km and is characterized by sandy and shallow bottoms suitable for children; the hinterland is covered in mediterranean scrub, artificial basins surrounded by woods and grazing lands.
Ugento is also full of historical and cultural monuments: the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta (1700), the church of Sant'Antonio da Padova, the Sanctuary of Madonna della Luce, the church of Santi Medici Cosma and Damiano, the church of Santa Maria di Costantinopoli, the crypt of the crucifix, Torre dell'Orologio (the clock tower), the Episcopal Palace and the Castle.
