Places to know and visit
The Church of San Pietro and San Paolo, the Chiesa Madre of the city, is dated back to the 1550s and was built with a romanic-renaissance style. Inside, there are chapels with altars and precious paintings.
The Church of San Rocco, where the golden-laminated statue of the protector of the city is preserved, along with a series of frescos representing his life.
The Monastery of Santa Maria del Casale, located on the Como mountain, was a stone structure built by the benedectine monks in the 1087 with a romanic style. Inside, there is a wooden statue of the Beata Vergine Maria dated back to the 1100.
The little Church of Annunziata, the ancient doorway to the village and the San Basilio Castle, in the district of Marconia. This castle was built as a fortified farm during the seventh century, but during the norman age it became a castle with a central fortified tower and a main courtyard surrounded by other buildings.
Metapontum, reachable by car in a few minutes, is an ancient greek city whose archeological site can be visited. Among the many ruins, there is the temple dedicated to Hera dated back to the fifth century B.C., also known as the "Tavole Palatine". The Archeological Park includes three temples: the temple of Atena, the temple of Apollo and the ionic temple dedicated to Afrodite, built around 470 B.C.
Matera, 50 km far from Marina di Pisticci. It was the first archeological site in southern Italy to be recognized as UNESCO's world heritage in the 1993, city of the "Sassi and rocky churches" and the prehistoric trenched villages. The ancient city is completely dug into the calcareous rock. In the Sassi, overlooked by the medieval Cathedral, there is the museum of the rural culture, which collects tools and instruments used in the different crafts that were at the basis of the economic and social life of the city.
There are many historical castles, churches, squares and defensive towers that embellish the city. The Dirupo is one of its most suggestive alleys, full of little white lined-up houses with red roofs, and it was included in the list of the "100 Meraviglie d'Italia da salvaguardare", 100 wonderful italian places that have to be protected.
Piazza Umberto I, in the heart of the village, is the square where the most important structures are situated: many historical castles, the parish church of S. Antonio da Padova, the Palazzo de Franchi built in the second half of the sixteenth century and characterized by an arcade and a majestic gate, the Palazzocchio, which owes its name to its position overlooking the square and is the office of a sixteenth-century archive, and the seventeenth-century Palazzo Giannantonio that is now the town hall, characterized by a monumental gate and an internal courtyard.
Terrazzo del Melograno, a suggestive little square on two levels a few meters far from Piazza Sant'Antonio Abate, characterized by arches and beautiful graffiti representing the flowers and fruits of pomegranate. This is the best place for romantic walks: in fact, the pomegranate is the symbol of union and fertility and was considered sacred by the Greeks. This terrace has a breathtaking panoramic view on the Valle del Cavone, Ionian sea, Marina di Pisticci and the Pollino mountains.
The beach of Marina di Pisticci is one of the 100 italian beaches that received the "Bandiera Verde" for the crystal-clear and shallow water, the wide fine-sand shore, the presence of lifeguards in case of emergency and areas for sports and activities. The "Bandiera Verde" also means that there are restaurants and pizzerie, bars, ice-cream parlors and playgrounds in proximity of the beach.
