Breakfast and departure towards Petra along the King's Highway. Along the way, stops will be made to visit some of Jordan's most important sites. Visit to Madaba, a small Christian town south of Amman. You will discover splendid Byzantine mosaics, especially the "Madaba Map", preserved in the Church of St. George - the oldest surviving map of the Middle East, and a must-see. Continuation to Mount Nebo. From the site, there is a stunning view of the Dead Sea and the mountains of the Judean desert. It's easy to imagine Moses looking out over the Promised Land from this very spot, knowing he would never enter it. Here, the Franciscans built a structure to protect a Byzantine church dating from the 4th to 6th centuries. Lunch in a local restaurant.
Next, visit to Shobak Castle, built in 1115. It was the first in a long series of fortifications constructed beyond the Jordan River by King Baldwin I of Jerusalem to control the road from Egypt to Damascus. It successfully withstood many attacks until it fell to Saladin's forces in 1189. Arrival in Wadi Musa (Petra), hotel check-in, dinner, and overnight stay. -
